About Delphic of Gamma Sigma Tau

Delphic of Gamma Sigma Tau Fraternity, Inc. is a historic multicultural fraternity with over 140 years of brotherhood and tradition. It is one of the oldest independent fraternities in the country and the first official multicultural fraternity to be formed on the East Coast.  The mission of the organization is to continue the legacy of the historic Delphic Fraternity and promote the awareness of the power of cultural and ethnic diversity through Gamma Sigma Tau.

Delphic of Gamma Sigma Tau was first founded as the Delphic Society on October 13, 1871 at the Geneseo State Normal School (today the State University of New York at Geneseo).  In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Delphic Fraternity grew to become a regional fraternity with eight active chapters.  However, by the 1930s, only one active chapter remained, the distinguished Zeta Chapter at the New Paltz Normal School (today the State University of New York at New Paltz).  With changing attitudes towards Greek life during the tumultuous decade of the 1960s, the Zeta Chapter became dormant in 1962.

On March 11, 1987, the Zeta Chapter at SUNY-New Paltz was re-established as the multicultural Delphic of Gamma Sigma Tau Fraternity.  It is the second fraternity in the nation to officially promote multicultural diversity within collegiate institutions and the first truly multicultural fraternity to be formed on the East Coast.  Today, Delphic of Gamma Sigma Tau operates three active undergraduate chapters and two active graduate chapters.

About Kappa Chapter

In 2009, eight Delphic Brothers were initiated to form the Kappa Chapter at the University of Virginia with the help of alumni brothers Phil Velez, Komain Somapeera, and Pete Williams.  The eight founders of the Kappa Chapter are James Zhenyu Liao, Sijie Xia, Wenhong You, Yiran Yao, Qihan Zhang, Sam Shanshan Li, Yizhou Jing and Christopher Myers.  The Kappa Chapter at the University of Virginia was officially recognized by the UVA Multicultural Greek Council on November 8, 2009, becoming the first and only officially-recognized multicultural fraternity at UVA.
